Asus Eee PC 901 Netbook reviews

This device has the portability and usability somewhere between a regular laptop, and an Iphone. The keyboard is very small, and mostly suitable to two finger typing. When at the coffee shop or airport, you will probably use it mostly as a read-mostly device, checking email, RSS, google maps, etc. However, at home or at the office, you can VNC the display, and work from your primary desktop, with a display at 1280×1024 (or beyond), and a full sized keyboard.

I wanted an ultra-portable computing device. I couldn’t see myself doing any real work on tiny handheld, such as an iPhone. And I didn’t want to commit to an expensive cellular data plan. The eeePC allows me to sit in a coffee shop, and easily skim through a couple of hundred RSS articles, bookmark the interesting ones, and then process later on my primary desktop with the plush 20″ LCD at a later time.

I am a long time linux user / admin, and with that knowledge, I can do some really awesome things with this device, many of which are documented in this page: [...]However, many users may want to consider the Windows version. Many of the best open source apps can still be had on the windows platform via portableapps.com, and they are super easy to install.

This device also has bluetooth and USB ports, so that leaves the option open to connect a cellular modem for those that need anywhere computing. It won’t fit in your shirt pocket like an iPhone, but its probably no more heavy than an SLR camera, and so its very easily tote-able.

Also, there are some good competitors out there, that seem similar in price. I like the 901 because it had non-reflective screen, and 6-cell battery. Many of them have reflective screens and 4-cell batteries. Although they may have other compelling features. In the case of Dell, they have a back-lit keyboard, which might be really handy, depending on the environment, esp. considering that these keyboards are too small to type without looking.
